The role

The Senior Teaching Lab Technician will join the leadership and management of a nine -strong technical team in the planning, preparation and delivery of all activities in the Chemistry CETL Undergraduate labs. Looking after all aspects of the lab they will liaise with many different parts of the organisation in pursuit of this.

This position is well-suited for individuals with sound experience as a Teaching Lab Technician, School Chemistry Technician, an Analytical Chemist, a Specialist Chemical Technician, or a Graduate Chemist with additional lab and management experience.

What will you be doing?

  • Day-to-day delivery of the excellent student experience in the University Chemistry Teaching Labs
  • Assist with leadership and management of the teaching lab team.
  • Managing the lab resources and procurement.
  • Negotiating with key stakeholders in the service provision.
  • Tailoring the resource to meet operational needs.
  • Providing technical input to specialist procurement.
  • Ensure the fabric of the space is maintained to an appropriate standard.
  • Preparing Chemicals and Labware
  • Setting up and maintaining specialist instrumentation
  • Running Analytical Instrument services
  • Specialist and in-house training will be provided where appropriate

You should apply if

  • Sound Chemical knowledge acquired through technical experience or a degree (or equivalent).
  • Experience in delivering undergraduate Chemistry practical labs or similar environments.
  • Previous experience in resource maintenance and procurement.
  • Highly organised with excellent time management, communication, and multitasking abilities.
  • Proficiency in staff management and delegation.
  • Familiarity with various standard lab instrumentation.
  • Ability to review and draft safety materials.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and willingness to learn new skills.
  • Capability to train others.

While this role involves supporting undergraduate teaching and student-facing activities, including providing support and materials, its primary focus is staff training rather than direct teaching responsibilities.

This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the undergraduate teaching technician team as we work to deliver an excellent in-lab experience to all our students.

This is an open-ended role with 3 years’ fixed funding until June 2027, with the possibility of extension, and is referred to internally as a “Level 2 Specialist Technician (Teaching)”.
